Leadwork FAQS
IS LEADWORK ROOFING SAFE?
Working from height is only dangerous if roofers ignore the correct measures and procedures. At Mendip, we have working-from-height insurance and train all our roofers to always follow safe roofing practices for the duration of the job.
Lead is a highly toxic material and can lead to health issues if mishandled incorrectly. However, with leadwork installed outside on your roof, any danger remains non-existent from inside the home.
DOES A NEW ROOF ADD VALUE TO A HOUSE?
Depending on the quality of installation, a new roof will increase the value of a home. With professional roofing services installing a new lead roof, you can expect up to a 60% return on your investment.
HOW MUCH IS LEAD ROOFING?
The cost of lead for your roof entirely depends on the size and complexity of the roofing application.
Average prices for 18sqm roofs can be somewhere between £2,000-£3,500, covering materials and labour over 3-5 working days. On the other hand, large lead roofs can cost up to £7,500 for installation.
Lead apron flashes and chimney flashes can cost between £250-£450, while lead gullies can cost between £150-£400.
WHY DO ROOFS NEED VENTILATION?
Investing in a ventilated lead roof for your home will control temperature levels and remove moisture. Allowing the air to circulate in the roof will reduce condensation, protecting the longevity of your roof’s structural integrity.
HOW LONG DOES A LEAD ROOF TAKE TO BUILD?
The time it takes depends on the size and complexity of the leadwork. An entire roof installation of a lead roof will take around 12 working days (8am – 4pm). However, lead flashing and gully work can be done in one day.
WHY IS LEAD USED FOR ROOFING?
Lead is one of the oldest and most reliable roofing materials due to its durability, longevity and flexibility. You can mould lead to any shape, it’s non-combustible and highly corrosion-resistant.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE WASTE?
As a 100% recyclable material, we ensure any lead we replace and take away is recycled sustainably. At FPC, we have a waste carrier licence for any waste removed from your property. We use a tipping truck service to keep your driveway skip-free and to enable you to park your car after a long day at work.
WILL MY NEW ROOF GET COVERED BY HOME INSURANCE
Most home insurance providers cover lead work roof repairs if sudden and unexpected events happen, such as storms ripping away flashing or falling trees puncturing holes through the lead work.
However, home insurance won’t cover lead work roofing for general wear and tear issues or damage from a lack of maintenance, like leaks or debris build-up.
