Investigating the Cause of Water Ingress Around a Velux Window
This roofing repair project was carried out in Yarley, Somerset, near Wookey and Wells, where our team was called in to investigate an ongoing leak around a Velux roof window.
Leaks around roof windows can often be difficult to diagnose without a thorough inspection, as the source of the problem is not always immediately visible from inside the property. Following a detailed assessment of the roof and surrounding area, we identified several installation defects that were allowing water to penetrate beneath the roof covering and enter the property.
Our investigation revealed that no upstand felt had been installed around the Velux window, significantly reducing the roof’s ability to channel water away from this vulnerable area. We also discovered that the lead soakers and flashing details had not been fitted correctly, creating gaps where wind-driven rain could penetrate the roof structure.
These defects meant that the existing installation was unable to provide a fully weatherproof seal around the roof window, resulting in ongoing water ingress and increasing the risk of damage to the surrounding roof timbers and internal finishes.
Specialist Velux Flashing Repairs & Waterproofing Works
To permanently resolve the issue, our team carried out a programme of remedial roofing works designed to restore the integrity of the roof and ensure the Velux window was correctly weatherproofed.
The project began with the careful removal of the slates surrounding the roof window, allowing access to the defective installation beneath. The existing felt and battens within the affected area were then removed and replaced with new roofing felt and battens to create a sound and reliable foundation for the repair works.
A new Velux slate flashing kit was supplied and installed in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, ensuring the roof window was correctly integrated into the surrounding roof covering. The slates were then carefully re-installed around the window to provide a neat and consistent finish.
Additional work was also carried out to the upper section of the Velux installation to address any remaining vulnerabilities and ensure complete protection against future water ingress. Once all works had been completed, the area was thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm that the leak had been successfully resolved.
The finished result is a fully weatherproof Velux roof window installation that provides long-term protection against the elements while maintaining the appearance and performance of the existing slate roof. The homeowner can now enjoy complete peace of mind knowing the leak has been professionally repaired & the roof is once again fully watertight!
