Investigating the Cause of Water Ingress & Roof Failure
We were called out to this property in Shepton Mallet to investigate ongoing water damage around the chimney and bedroom eaves.
Following a thorough inspection, we identified several issues contributing to the problem, including poorly installed leadwork, cracked and deteriorated mortar, and a lack of eaves protection and rafter trays. This had allowed the roofing membrane to come into contact with the loft insulation, restricting ventilation and increasing the risk of moisture-related issues.
After completing our investigation, it became clear that the most effective long-term solution was a full re-roof. Due to the restricted access at the property, scaffolding was not a viable option, but that didn’t stop the Mendip Roofing Contractors team from delivering the project safely and efficiently.

A Full Roof Refurbishment With Modern Upgrades
Over the course of just three days, we completed a full roof refurbishment, which included:
- Careful removal and stacking of the existing roof tiles for re-use.
- Removal of the old battens and outdated 1F bitumen felt.
- Installation of new over-fascia ventilation.
- Fitting of 5U eaves protection trays.
- Installation of 800mm rafter roll-out trays to maintain a clear ventilation pathway.
- Installation of Tyvek Supro breathable membrane, our preferred choice for superior weather protection and performance.
- Installation of new BS-compliant coloured roofing battens.
- Re-installation of the existing roof tiles.
- Replacement and upgrading of all leadwork around the chimney.
- Re-bedding and pointing of the ridge and verge tiles using traditional mortar, finished to a smooth and professional standard.
The result is a fully weatherproof, properly ventilated roofing system that will protect the property for many years to come.
