Roofing Survey & Planned Roof Refurbishment in Frome, Somerset

Roofing Survey & Planned Roof Refurbishment in Frome, Somerset

Identifying the Cause of Persistent Roof Leaks & Planning a Long-Term Solution

Investigating Water Ingress Across an Ageing Roof

This roofing project began with a detailed roof inspection at a residential property in Frome after the homeowner reported ongoing leaks around the roof valley and wanted to identify the underlying cause before further damage could occur.

Following a comprehensive assessment, our team identified several issues affecting the overall condition of the roof. The primary source of the leak was traced to the valley, where the existing mortar had deteriorated over time, allowing rainwater to penetrate beneath the roof covering. We also found that several tiles within the valley had begun to slip due to inadequate fixings, increasing the risk of further water ingress during periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

During the inspection, we discovered additional areas requiring attention, including significantly weathered ridge and verge mortar. These defects were creating multiple vulnerable points across the roof and, if left untreated, could have resulted in more extensive repairs in the future.

Following our survey, we recommended a comprehensive programme of remedial roofing works designed to restore the roof’s structural integrity, improve weather resistance, and provide the homeowner with a durable, low-maintenance roofing system.

Planned Roofing Improvements for Long-Term Protection

The recommended works will begin with the installation of full scaffolding to provide safe access around the property. The existing valley will then be removed and replaced with a modern maintenance-free dry valley system with high upstands, offering improved drainage and long-term protection against water ingress.

As part of the roof overhaul, we will install a new breathable roofing membrane, treated battens, eaves protection trays, and bird protection systems to improve ventilation and prevent birds from entering the roof space. The ridge and verge tiles will also be re-bedded and re-pointed using traditional mortar to restore the roof’s weather resistance and appearance.

In addition, specialist bird protection will be fitted beneath the existing solar panels. Our team will safely remove and reinstall the panels as part of the project, ensuring they are fully recommissioned once the roofing works are complete.

To minimise disruption, all waste materials will be removed using tip trailers rather than skips, helping to protect the homeowner’s newly laid tarmac driveway. With the works now scheduled, we look forward to transforming the roof into a durable, weatherproof system built to provide reliable protection for years to come.

We’ll update this case study with completed photographs once the project has been finished.
